Majarete: a sweet corn pudding sprinkled with cinnamon and nutmeg.
Beaches
White sand beaches that seem to endlessly run into the horizon, punctuated with slim coconut trees reaching the skies: it’s what the Dominican Republic is best known for. Check out a few of the DR’s hottest beaches below.
Playa Rincón: Ranked by Condé Nast Traveler as one of the top ten most beautiful beaches in the world, Playa Rincón’s pristine, long white sand beach lining a bay of calm turquoise waters, peppered with coconut trees, captures every visitor’s eye.
Playa Cabarete: The Caribbean’s hub for windsurfing, kiteboarding, and laser sailing, Playa Cabarete–also known as “Kite Beach” on the western side is where you can learn and practice wind water sports all year round.
Punta Cana: The name Punta Cana is used to refer to the entire 50-kilometer (30-mile) beachfront destination, but the eponymous beach–sandwiched between Playa Los Corales to the north and Playa Blanca to the south–is where the area’s tourism got its jumpstart in 1978.

Music and dancing are an integral part of everyday life in the DR. Experience folkloric music every Friday and Saturday night in Santo Domingo on Plaza de España, or dance the night away to a live son and merengue band on Sundays by the ruins of San Francisco.
Bar hop and party in Santiago’s downtown, or discover the “drink” lounges of Puerto Plata, where merengue and bachata dominate.
Beach nightlife takes on new meaning in Cabarete, where you can party the night away at a range of bars along the waterfront.
Punta Cana’s glitzy nightclubs and marinas are equally popular, pumping house music or offering sophisticated wine bars.
